If you’re like most golfers, you have a routine associated with playing your best golf game. Maybe you hydrate beforehand, run through some quick stretches, or close your eyes and visualize that perfect shot. Lately, some golfers have been taking the idea of a pre-game routine one step further by incorporating CBD.

Since CBD was removed from the banned substances list in 2018, well-known golfers like Billy Horschel have taken to using CBD, claiming it improves their athletic performance, promotes fitness, and hastens recovery time.

Here’s what you need to know about the compound, and whether it could be helpful for you.

How PGA Champions are Embracing CBD

Billy Horschel was in a world of hurt last year, literally and metaphorically. He’d gone six months without finishing in the top eight, and his golf game was suffering. Fortunately, he found a cure that worked for him: CBD.

A five-time PGA Tour winner, Horschel started using CBD products just after a sub-par finish at the British Open in July of 2019. After incorporating CBD into his routine, he had four top-eight finishes over the next four months and was playing what pros everywhere regarded as some of his best and most consistent games.

According to a recent New York Times article about Horscheel and his affinity for CBD, the golfer credits the supplement for boosting his performance:

Horschel, the 2014 FedEx Cup champion, is convinced that the CBD-infused topical creams and powders produced by the company Beam have contributed to his return to top form by increasing his quality of sleep and decreasing inflammation in his knees and ankles.

And it’s not just Horschel who is jumping on the CBD train. Many well-known golfers throughout the PGA have incorporated CBD into their training regimens. The New York Times article goes on to say:

[Horschel] is the latest in a growing group of tour members, including Bubba Watson, a two-time Masters champion, and Scott McCarron, the reigning Schwab Cup winner on the Champions Tour, who are paid endorsers for CBD products. Their advocacy would appear to signal a growing acceptance of CBD use in the conservative world of professional golf, which has been slow to distinguish between recreational and medicinal use of marijuana-derived products. The chemical compound, which is used to treat a variety of ailments from pain and inflammation to anxiety and seizure disorders, has been legal for golfers to use since the World Anti-Doping Agency removed CBD from its list of banned substances in 2018.

CBD as the New “Swing Oil”: 3 Big Benefits for Golfers

For years, golfers have joked about using “swing oil” (typically in the form of beer or booze) to grease their games and make them more competitive. Recently, though, CBD has emerged as a serious competitor to the beloved 12-ounce cans.

In addition to the high-profile adoption of CBD products by world-class golfers like Bubba Watson and Billy Horschel, the PGA Tour is ripe with speculation that Tiger Woods and Phil Mickelson chew CBD chewing gum or use CBD tinctures during big games.

So, what’s the truth? Is CBD the new and improved “swing oil?” And how does it truly impact a golfer’s game? Here are five benefits you should know about:

1. Decreased Inflammation

In addition to ice baths and compression socks, CBD is a great way to manage inflammation after a hard workout. By inducing apoptosis, or inhibition of cell proliferation, CBD acts as a potent anti-inflammatory agent. This is especially important for athletes since inflammation is one of the leading causes of muscle soreness and injury.

Interestingly enough, this anti-inflammatory power is also what makes CBD a potential treatment for everything from cancer to psoriasis.

2. Relaxation and Better Sleep

Great sleep and a relaxed state of mind are critical to a great golf game. Unfortunately, both of those things can be difficult to access during times of stress. This is where CBD comes in. Research has suggested that CBD can be an effective treatment for insomnia. According to the American Sleep Association (ASA):

Although more studies need to be performed, some research supports the theory that CBD and cannabinoids may improve sleep. This study, published in the journal, Medicines, involved 409 people with insomnia. Data was collected from June 2016 to May 2018. Participants rated their symptoms of insomnia on a scale of 1 to 10 with 10 being the most severe. Starting symptoms were rated 6.6 on average.

The participants were treated using the cannabis flower with varied combustion methods including vape, pipe, and joint. THC potency on average was 20 percent and limited to 30 percent. CBD potency was on average 5.7 percent and limited to 30 percent. After using cannabis, participants rated symptoms on average to be 2.2, which was a decrease of 4.5.

The results indicated the cannabinoids in cannabis decreased symptoms of insomnia. But the study involved using the cannabis flower, which contains several cannabinoids. It’s difficult to determine if relief from insomnia was due to CBD or another cannabinoid.

Additionally, CBD is believed to help relax muscles and decrease stress – both of which are important for a good night’s sleep and optimal performance on the course the next day.

3. Quicker Muscle Recovery

Golfers are athletes, above all else, and CBD helps them stay that way. Initial findings from recent research suggest that CBD may help decrease delayed onset muscle soreness and aid in faster workout recovery.

Even better, CBD comes in a variety of easy-to-apply salves and ointments, which allows golfers to reap their benefits on the road.
